English for Air Travel
Traveling by plane can be stressful, but knowing the right vocabulary helps. From check-in to landing, this lesson covers what you need to say and understand.
1. At the Check-In Desk
This is your first stop. You'll need your itinerary and passport.
Common Questions & Phrases
- Agent: "Are you checking any bags?"
- You: "Yes, just one suitcase. I have a carry-on as well."
- Agent: "Would you prefer a window or an aisle seat?"
- You: "An aisle seat, please."
- Agent: "Here is your boarding pass. Your flight leaves from Gate 12."
2. Security & Layovers
Security can be strict. You'll often hear imperatives (commands) here.
At Security
- "Please remove your shoes and belt."
- "Place all electronics in the bin."
- "Do you have any liquids over 100ml?"
Connecting Flights
If you don't fly directly, you have a layover (or stopover).
"Is my luggage checked through to the final destination?" (Use this to ask if you need to pick up your bags).
3. On the Plane
Announcements
"Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts as we are experiencing some turbulence."
"We are now beginning our descent into London."
Useful Requests
"Excuse me, could I have a blanket?"
"Could you help me put my bag in the overhead bin?"
Customs vs. Immigration
These are different! Immigration checks your passport and visa (who you are). Customs checks your luggage (what you are bringing). You might be asked "Do you have anything to declare?" at customs.
