What do the levels mean?
Schools, jobs and exams describe English with six levels, from A1 to C2. This test goes from A1 to C1. Here is what each level means in real life.
First steps
You can say hello, introduce yourself and understand simple words about you, your family and your home.
Starting out
You can talk about your day and your past, ask for directions, and understand short, clear messages.
Getting confident
You can travel on your own, talk about your plans and opinions, and understand people who speak clearly.
Upper-intermediate
You can talk about lots of topics easily, follow most TV and films, and read articles and the news.
Advanced
You can use English for work and study, understand what people really mean, and speak quickly and naturally.
How it works
A quick, honest estimate.
No tricks, and no email at the end. Here is exactly how I work out your level.
Five bands
The questions go up in five bands: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. Each band has six questions: two grammar, two vocabulary, one reading and one listening.
Pass a band
You pass a band when you get four or more of its six questions right. Your level is the highest band you pass. One small slip in a lower band is OK.
It stops early
When the questions get too hard, the test stops. That saves you time: the rest would only be guessing.
An estimate
Thirty questions can’t measure everything, and this test has no speaking or writing. So this is a guide, not an official certificate.
Questions
Before you start.
Is the test really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no payment. Your result stays on your phone or computer. Nothing is sent to me.
Is this an official CEFR certificate?
No. It’s a quick estimate to help you choose the right practice. For an official certificate, you need an exam such as IELTS or Cambridge English.
How long does it take?
About ten minutes for all 30 questions. If the questions get too hard, it stops early, so it can be quicker.
Can I take it again?
Yes, as many times as you like. You get new questions first, and the page remembers your last level on this device.
Is it British or American English?
British English. The listening is in my voice, with a normal British accent, at normal speed. You can make it slower, and you can listen twice.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers, in any modern browser. Turn your sound on for the listening questions.
I’m a teacher. Can my students use it?
Yes, please! It’s a good first lesson: everyone takes the test, then plays the free games for their level. See free English games for your class.
After the test
Then practise with me, for free.
Five free games, 26 free lessons, and lots of free videos on YouTube. Your plan at the end shows you where to start.
